Antioch to Once Again Have a Free, Direct-Mail, City-Wide Newspaper

By Allen Payton, Publisher

I’m happy to officially announce that the Antioch Herald will be printed and mailed to 26,000 homes and businesses in Antioch, beginning May 1st, 2011.

We appreciate the opportunity presented by the Monthly Grapevine, to insert a print version of our news site, into their East County/Antioch edition, which publishes on the 1st of each month, reaching 26,000 homes and businesses by mail – for FREE!

It has allowed us to reduce our postage costs and pass those savings onto our advertisers, reducing ad rates by 40% and more, making it more affordable for local businesses to reach their market with their message, each month.

We have some of the same team members who published the original Antioch Press, before I sold it in 2005, back together working to make both the Antioch Herald print and online versions, a reality, including Editor Dave Roberts and soon writer Teresa Klein and graphic artist Linda Baker. Plus, we’ve added some new team members, Webmaster and graphic artist Emily Bernardi, writers Harry Stoll and Tami Barrera, and advertising sales reps Dave Godfrey and Sharon Ouka.

We go to print on Tuesday night, April 19, so there’s still time to get your ad in our first issue. It includes a free ad on our website. Please email sales@antiochherald.com by Monday or call me at (925) 457-5324 and we’ll make it happen for you.

Since this is a free paper to the readers, it’s because of our advertisers that we’re able to publish our paper and news site. We thank them for that. So please be sure to support those advertisers and let them know you saw their ad in the Herald.

We look forward and are committed to bringing you the news and information about Antioch, you might not read elsewhere – about our people, politicians, police, pastors & priests, places, events and activities, while we help promote our businesses and grow our local economy, once again. Our desire is to help fulfill our City’s Vision to make Antioch a better place to live, learn, work, worship and play in a safe and stimulating environment.

The Herald is The People’s Paper – your paper. So if you have something you think is interesting and/or important that you want covered, either write it up and submit it to us, with a photo or two, or let us know by contacting Dave Roberts at editor@antiochherald.com. We’ll do our best to get it, at least on our website – which we’ll update regularly, and/or in the newspaper.

For those who want to advertise, we also represent the Monthly Grapevine in Antioch. So if you’d like an ad in that publication, please let us know. To learn more about them, please click on their ad, on the upper right side of this page. We thank Jim and Karen Spann for this new business relationship that we hope and expect will be beneficial for both our businesses and all those who advertise with us.

Please be sure to look for the Antioch Herald inside the Monthly Grapevine, each month, beginning on May 1st.

Calpine Donates $10,000 to Food Bank

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

Supervisor Federal Glover, who represents the communities of Bay Point, Pittsburg, Antioch, Oakley and Bethel Island, raised more money for the Food Bank than any of his fellow supervisors. “My district is not the richest,” said Glover, “but District V’s residents have the biggest hearts.”

The supervisor’s office raised $15,405 in the County Cares Food Fight that pits Contra Costa County employees against Solano County workers to see which county could raise the most money per employee to benefit the Contra Costa/Solano County Food Bank.

Lisa Sherrill, community relations manager for the food bank, explained that “each county’s workers try to outdo each other’s county by raising money for the food bank.
The supervisors’ offices and other departments also compete among themselves to see which office can raise the most funds.”

It is the first time Glover won the Little Apple award, given annually to the Contra Costa supervisor who raises the most funds for the competition. Glover’s campaign was
boosted by a $10,000 donation from Calpine Corporation, which operates two power plants in District V.

The $113,000 raised by Contra Costa employees added to the $29,956 raised by Solano will pay for 285,912 meals through the Food Bank.

Antioch wastewater staff recognized by CWEA

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Joaquin Gonzalez and Juan Arevalo are outstanding wastewater professionals.

Delta Diablo Sanitation District (DDSD) is proud to announce two operations staff have been honored as outstanding wastewater professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area by the California Water Environment Association. DDSD received awards for Operator of the Year, recognizing an individual with outstanding performance in the field of wastewater plant operations, and Supervisor of the Year, recognizing an individual who shows exemplary supervisory skills while performing their daily work.

Juan Arevalo, a member of the DDSD team since 2007, was presented with the 2010 Operator of the Year Award. He was specifically recognized for his role drafting new Standard Operating Procedures for training purposes ensuring consistency in the operation of the wastewater treatment plant; the lead role he took in DDSD’s internship program which provides real world experiences to complement the academic training received in the classroom; and, the complex work he undertook on the computerized Supervisory Control and Data System which had developed flaws leading to several false alarms.

Supervisor of the Year Award winner Joaquin Gonzalez has been with DDSD for 18 years, the last four in the role of Operations Supervisor. Responsible for scheduling and planning all work tasks and coordinating maintenance repairs by DDSD’s 15 Operations staff, Joaquin’s win reflects his collaborative leadership style of promoting team work before personal aspirations. Under his leadership, the Plant has recorded seven years of “zero violations” and has received several local, state and national awards such as “Plant of the Year” and “Safety Plant of the Year”.

Wastewater operators are entrusted with the job of protecting the environment with the upmost integrity, optimizing the treatment process so it runs efficiently, while ensuring discharge permit regulations are met – and formally reporting if they are not. Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days per year, DDSD is located on the Pittsburg-Antioch border and serves nearly 200,000 residents in the communities of Antioch, Bay Point and Pittsburg. In addition to its 16.5 million gallon a day wastewater treatment plant, DDSD also operates one of the largest industrial recycled water plants in California

Arevalo and Gonzalez now compete against other regional winners for the California Water Environment Association’s State award in April.

Antioch Business & Community Leaders Say Farewell to Devi Lanphere at “Irish Wake”

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

Juan Chen-Olsen, Tom Lamothe, Kris Landry, Devi Lanphere, Allen Payton and Christine O'Brien gather for Devi's farewell party at Carpaccio Ristorante on Friday night, January 21.

By Allen Payton, Publisher

Many of Antioch’s business and community leaders gathered at Carpaccio Ristorante, Friday night, January 21, to say farewell to former Antioch Chamber of Commerce President & CEO, Devi Lanphere, at what she labeled an “Irish wake.”

Lanphere, who served in the position for seven years, was very involved in the community, including membership in the Antioch Rotary Club, serving as Chair of the Antioch Economic Development Commission and overseeing the Antioch Community Foundation, among other things.

Her position was eliminated in December, when the Chamber Board made the decision to cut back on expenses. Lanphere is relocating to Mountain View, California.

Devi Lanphere speaks with Jack and Donna Roddy at her farewell party.
