The Kiwanis Club of the Delta from Antioch, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, East Bay Regional Park District, and the City of Antioch proudly present The 35th Annual Holiday Run and Walk for Health this Saturday, December 10, 2011.

This event benefits local schools, youth, and libraries and is an effective vehicle to promote and build a healthy community—starting with our youth and will once again be held at the Contra Loma Regional Park in Antioch. Click here for directions! See below for the entry fees per race category.

This year the Holiday Run and Walk for Health will feature participation challenges for schools and libraries. Last year’s event generated nearly $10,000 in grants for our community.

A major part of the raceday activities is a Health Fair. Health Fair vendors will be providing health testing, fitness information, and healthy food and drink sampling.

The journey for Aaron Leake has been a long and hard one. Almost two and half years ago, one week after the birth of his son, Aaron was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

As anyone that has a cancer patient in their family understands it takes a tremendous toll on everyone. You look forward to the good days and cry when the bad days come. You try to keep your family member comfortable and make those everlasting memories that you’ll never forget.

As Aaron’s cancer has progressed we have been blessed by the numerous people that have offered to help and come visit. He recently had an especially special day as he is a lifelong Niner fan. Ex-Niner player (and former Antioch High star) Jeremy Newberry paid Aaron a visit.

It put a twinkle in Aaron’s eyes when he learned that he was going to finally meet a Niners player in person. Aaron’s massage therapist, A. Ben Cabal, set up the special meeting. The kindness of Mr. Cabal and Mr. Newberry will be one that our family never forgets.

Katrina Nahe earned her third World Kickboxing Championship Title at the 2011 IKF World Kickboxing Muay Thai Championships in Orlando, Florida after knocking out her opponent Shannon Bass in the first Round of their scheduled bout on July 17. The victory makes her the first female teenager in history to achieve such success in the sport of Kickboxing Martial arts by earning three times the IKF World Championship Titles in 2007, 2009, 2011.

Katrina Nahe earned her nickname “The Storm” from her fierce fighting style that reminds one of a major storm demolishing anyone in her path. When Katrina is in action, she executes flurries of Kickboxing techniques that packs an awesome knockout record of a 50% ratio and is no wonder why to many her fight name well fits “The Storm.”

Katrina, an Antioch resident and student has been training now in the Martial art Discipline of Kickboxing Self Defense since she was 5yrs old going into her 9th year and has recently earned her Black Belt for her phenomenal accomplishments as a Martial artists that no other in the World has achieved the milestone that she has.

Her manager/trainer, Professor Dennis Guila, owner of Guila’s Hawaiian Kaju-Kickboxing said, “Katrina’s actions speak louder than Words.” But when you meet and get to know Katrina she is as Humble as a Peacock.

On the same Fight event, Antioch’s Hugo Rivera on July 16, 2011 Impressively earned his 2011 IKF World Championship Title by first unanimously beating 2009, and 2010 IKF World Kickboxing Champion Albin Kaziu of Brooklyn New York. Then on July 17th having to meet up against another IKF World Champion of another weight class of 2009, 2010 Rudy McGlothlin, he won by an astonishing unanimous decision.

Hugo was mentally, physically, and spiritually prepared for the challenges that he was faced with earning his claim as a two-time IKF World Kickboxing Champion for 2007, and 2011.

Other honorable mentions on Guila’s Team G-Force Fighters go out to Sammy “The Jet” Sosa, who from bell to bell brought on constant striking action, and Gary Grant for giving their best and representing Antioch.

The mission of the Antioch Sports Legends Program under the auspices of the Antioch Historical Society is preserving local sports history, honoring sports achievement excellence, and connecting local generations.

Adult volunteers interested in assisting with this program are invited to attend the Antioch Sports Legends Committee’s regular monthly meetings. These meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Antioch Historical Society Museum located at 1500 West 4th Street in Antioch. The next meeting will be on Wed., June 1st at 6:30 p.m.

Tim Rhyan, Deer Valley High School’s veteran Athletic Director will garner top honors from California Coaches Association (CCA) this year when he will receive an Athletic Director of the Year award at its June 11 awards dinner in Sacramento.

Rhyan was selected from Athletic Directors throughout the state for his professional contribution of time, service and dedication to his profession and athletics. His career spans 40 plus years of coaching and teaching at both high schools and junior colleges in Contra Costa County. For the past 12 years he has led Deer Valley High School’s Athletic Department where under his unique leadership one-third of its student body participates in athletics.

Rhyan’s emphasis on both academics and athletics equals success for not only him, but also the school’s varsity teams who won half of all the Bay Valley Athletic League Championships in 2009-10. Among his contributions that set him apart are his authorship and implementation of multiple sports policy guides for the Antioch School District. He has also served as site director for numerous North Coast Section events, and sits on the North Coast Section Eligibility Committee.

A Pleasant Hill native, Rhyan, 65, is a graduate of College Park High School where he was an all-league player who received a full scholarship to Utah State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree. He later attended St. Mary’s College in Orinda where he received a Masters Degree in Athletic Administration.

CCA is a professional organization of California coaches, dedicated to maintaining the highest possible standards for athletic competition and coaching conditions in the State. Their focus is on leadership, education, training, ethics, goodwill and cultural diversity.

It’s Not Your Grandfather’s Basketball Show!

The Harlem Ambassadors professional show basketball game is a fresh, community fundraiser full of high-flying slam dunks, hilarious comedy, and fun for the whole family! Since 1998, Harlem Ambassadors, Inc. has partnered with hundreds of non-profit organizations in all 50 states and 19 foreign countries.
