Calling all golfers and Antioch PAL supporters. It’s that time of the year again! We are proud to announce the 8th Annual Antioch Police Activities League Charity Golf Tournament is open for player and sponsorship registration. Don’t miss your change to be part of this year’s fun and excitement! The tournament will be taking place on Friday, September 11, 2015, at the beautiful Lone Tree Golf Course and Event Center here in Antioch.

Please remember, all proceeds raised from this tournament go toward helping the youth in our community stay active and socially involved through positive relationships with mentors and members of the Antioch Police Department. PITTSBURG – Kites will fly this Sunday in Pittsburg at the City’s inaugural kiteboarding event! The City, together with its new watersports shop, The Kite Bar, will host the Launch the Launch RampKiteboarding Competition from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Riverview Park.

“This is just one step in our long-term vision to turn Riverview Park into an elite kiteboarding hub and training center,” said Garrett Evans, Assistant City Manager. “We also hope to expose our residents to our waterfront, and encourage them to try their hand at stand up paddling, kiteboarding, kayaking, and more.”

Since early 2013 the City has been working with the local Kiteboard community to make this a reality. This week Pittsburg put the finishing touches on its new non-motorized watercraft launch ramp at Riverview Park, and last week, The Kite Bar, the city’s new water/wind sports shop opened its doors. “We’re thrilled to see the action and enthusiasm around kiteboarding, and we’re excited to bring a new sport and adventure to our community. We always knew wind would be an asset to us, but we never knew it would evolve into something as exciting as this,” says Pittsburg Mayor Pete Longmire.

Sunday’s event will feature Big Air, Freestyle, and Slalom competitions with elite kite boarders from the Bay Area and beyond. Spectators can expect near-constant kiteboarding action from 10am-4pm. Free Stand Up Paddle Board trials will be available to the public throughout the day in The Kite Bar’s 15 foot demonstration pool. There will also be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new ramp, a demonstration by Kymera Body Boards, and delicious BBQ available for purchase. Event attendance for spectators is free. Sport Pool involved in chemical malfunction remains closed

Contra Costa County Environmental Health Department completed their facility inspection at the Antioch Water Park Friday evening and approved opening on Saturday, June 20, 2015. Pool chemistry was recorded compliant with California Health and Safety Codes.

The Sport Pool will remain closed to allow the City of Antioch and the County to conduct further testing in conjunction with the State of California. Sport Pool was the only pool involved in the chemical malfunction on Thursday, June 18, 2015.

To accommodate all guests the admission fees will be reduced to $12.00 for general admission. The lap pool will be available for use and all slides will be ready for visitors. Antioch Water Park provides unique summer fun for friends and families, and water play is great exercise!

On June 18, 2015 at approximately 2:31 pm Contra Costa County Fire – Engine 82 (Antioch), Quint 83 (Antioch), Engine 81 (Antioch), Engine 88 (Antioch), Engine 85 (Pittsburg), Battalion 8 (Pittsburg), 1113 (BC of EMS) and 1102 Asst. Chief of Operations responded to a report of 10 to 12 children getting sick from drinking pool water at the Antioch Water Park at 4701 Lone Tree Way in Antioch.

Upon arrival of the First AMR Unit (PM175) the incident was upgraded to an MCI Tier 1 based on reports of 15-20 patients. Battalion 8 upgraded the response to add 2 additional Engines. Engine 82 arrived on scene established Prewett IC and requested County Hazmat. A medical group was established with Captain 88 as Med. Group Supervisor.

After carefully assessing the incident it was found that more patients were coming forward and the incident was escalated to a Tier 3 MCI. Notifications were made to all agencies. A total of 34 patients were treated, 17 were transported to area hospitals and 17 were released to their legal guardians.

Per County Hazmat, County Health and CCCFPD Investigators and with the cooperation of the City of Antioch and its Recreation Department a joint investigation into cause and origin was initiated. Those results are not available as of this writing. During this hour and a half incident no responders were injured and the water park remains closed this [Friday] morning.

On Friday, June 19, 2015 the Antioch Water Park will remain closed to allow for continued testing of all operations and further review by Contra Costa County Environmental Health Department. Facility safety is the primary concern for all parties.

The Antioch Water Park closed at approximately 2:30 on Thursday, June 18, 2015 in response to a chemical malfunction in one of the five pools. All guests were escorted safely from the facility and individuals needing medical attention were treated.

“Parks & Recreation Director Nancy Kaiser and her staff did a great job handling this incident,” said City Manager Steve Duran. “They were the first responders. They made decisions quickly.They removed the kids from potential danger and got the help they needed from CC Fire. When I got there, I saw no chaos or confusion. Contra Costa Fire had incident command and they, along with EMTs, CHP and Antioch PD were terrific.”

“When Chief Cantando and I arrived and were briefed by Nancy, CC Fire, etc., it was clear that everyone was communicating, working as one team and had the situation in hand,” he added.

This summer, you can have fun while and celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Antioch Water Park and conserve water, at the same time, during the drought.

How? By playing in the water at the park, instead of the sprinklers, at home.

The city-owned facility opened in 1995 and was paid for with taxpayer funds through the Mello-Roos assessment district. So, we own it and it’s run by the city’s Parks & Recreation Department.

In fact, the City of Antioch has gone further in its water conservation measures at the park, by upgrading the chemical and filtration system, saving 100’s of gallons and money, each month.

The water park’s season began on May 23 and runs through Monday, September 7 and it is now open seven days a week.

They employ 150 people, mostly teenagers, each summer, and about 70 of the employees are new for this season, according to Antioch Parks & Recreation Department Director Nancy Kaiser.

“For almost all of them, it’s their first job,” she added.

The water park also offers a seven-week Junior Lifeguard Camp for kids ages 11-15, as well as Coyote Hills Summer Day Camp from June 15 to July 31.
