After apparently “playing chicken” with a train, with two of his friends, a 45-year-old Antioch man was struck, Monday evening, October 31st, but survived. It occurred along the waterfront near where A Street turns and becomes West Second Street, causing the train to stop and remain there for about two hours.

“We walked down here and saw three people on the tracks,” said witnesses Mary Thiessens and Kyle Walk. “Then right when the train got here they got up and ran off the tracks.”

“No one got hit that I’d seen,” Thiessens added. “Maybe they got grazed by it.”

The incident occurred about 4:00 p.m. according to one witness, who chose not to be identified,

Contra Costa Fire Department personnel responded with a fire engine and ambulance, as well as Antioch Police officers. They called in a helicopter to evacuate the man and police asked those watching nearby to move back.

The man, identified only as Dave, and his two friends, Lee Jeffrey and Daniel Valenzuela, were sitting on the railroad tracks as the train was approaching.

“We were all walking down there, and the train was coming and we were sitting there and looking at each other and wondering who was going to jump first,” said Jeffrey. “We all got up and Dave tripped. What are you going to do?”

“All I know is that they’re taking him to John Muir and I’m holding his stuff,” he added.

One police officer confirmed that “Dave” had been grazed by the train but survived.
