About The International Film Showcase

The IFS project is the brainchild of Efi Lubliner and Jo Alice Canterbury.  During the many years they have attended international film festivals around the United States, they compiled a list of films which they believe deserve wider distribution and recognition. After repeatedly recommending their favorite films to friends, they were frustrated to discover that these cinematic gems were neither screened in local theaters nor released on DVD.

Programming is monthly at El Campanil Theatre, The Orinda Theater and Blue Light Cinemas in Cupertino.

Homeowners Bill of Rights Vote on Monday, Hold Banks Accountable!

This week we made history! After months and years of organizing CCISCO, and our PICO partners helped to win approval of the Homeowners Bill of Rights by a Conference Committee of the state legislature.

NOW we NEED YOUR HELP to make sure the Homeowners Bill of Rights becomes law in California. On Monday the full Senate and Assembly will vote on SB 900 and AB 278, the Homeowners Bill of Rights.

Please let your state legislators know that you’re counting on them to stand with our homeowners and communities and not be bought by big banks whose unethical and illegal policies and practices caused and continue the foreclosure crisis.

Your support is incredibly important at this time. If you can come with us to Sacramento on Monday please meet us at 9:30am at Antioch Church family at 55 E. 18th St. in Antioch. It is vitally important that we are at the capitol to show our support for this bill. Raising “Super” Healthy Families is the goal of every parent. Moms and dads innately want the best for their beloved. With the right health philosophy and action steps, you and your loved ones can enjoy an excellent quality of life together. Here’s a super healthy philosophy with some science and common sense to back it up.

Health comes from within. The moment you were conceived, one cell from your mother and one from your father united to form a unique and magnificent you. This united cell multiplied over and over again during the next nine months into 80 quadrillion cells without any help from the scientific community. Your heart, lungs, fingers and toes, were all positioned by your Innate Intelligence to develop and function properly.

As long as there is no interference to this process, everything can develop perfectly and you are prepared to be delivered into this world. This Innate Intelligence stays with you after you are born. With the nervous system as its conduit, this intelligence controls and coordinates the function of your entire body. Keeping this system free from interference is essential to a healthy life. This Innate philosophy strengthens you. It keeps you healthy in mind and body. If you teach this philosophy to your children you will raise them as strong, confident individuals who trust their body, immune system, and genetic potential. They will be “super” healthy kids.

On the other hand, teaching a drug-oriented philosophy from birth can lead to drug-dependency as an adult. Too many people buy into the philosophy that they need drugs to be healthy.

While this may be true in limited cases of extreme pain, sickness and disease, it is not true or healthy as an overall philosophy or lifestyle.

Think about the impact of a “drug first” philosophy. When your baby gets sick for the first time, you have a choice. If you do not have confidence in your child’s natural immune system, you might immediately panic and give your child a drug. In their toddler years when they get a cold or infection you may give them a drug right away so they won’t “suffer”. Each time they say they do not feel good, rather than rely on their body’s innate wisdom, do you call in a prescription or go to the store and get them an over-the-counter drug?

When your child is old enough to go to school, the teacher might inform you that they are struggling to concentrate or sit still. The child might be labeled and immediately given a drug.

What is the message that is constantly sent to a child under these “drug first” conditions? If a child is taught that they should take a drug every time they do not feel good, this drug-first behavior becomes conditioned. Is it any wonder that when this child has a minor ailment, does not make the team, or has a social conflict that they turn to drugs to “feel better?”

Your health care philosophy is your choice. The 100 Year Lifestyle and chiropractic deliver an innate health care philosophy which is working for millions. It can also work for you and your family. Isn’t it time you begin trusting yourself and this innate philosophy and begin living the ‘super” healthy life that you and your children deserve?

Antioch City Park, 10th & “A” Streets

As we celebrate the birth of our nation, join us in prayer as we re-dedicate our city to the spirit of Christ as our founding fathers envisioned.

Following are the words that appear on the plaque on the corner of 10th & “A” Streets, the site of the July 4^th, 1851 picnic where the townspeople changed the name from Smith’s Landing to Antioch:

“july 4, anno domini, 1951

This city was named 100 years ago for Antioch in Syria where the disciples of Jesus Christ were first called Christians. (acts 11:26) Today we rededicate ourselves to him in grateful memory of our founding fathers who envisioned a city and a world under the rule of the spirit of christ.”

The theme scripture verse for the Community Prayer is “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

This year’s Antioch July 4^th Celebration – which will include fireworks for the first time in three years – will also feature a Car Show from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.

So, if you have a Classic Car, Hot Rod or Low Rider, bring it down and show it off. The location will be in the City Hall Parking Lot on 3^rd and H Streets.

Registration/Check-In is from 3:30-4:30 pm.

There’s no entry fee but there will be fabulous trophies!

Then at the end of the show, line up and drive your car in the parade at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 3:44 p.m. the Antioch Police Department received a call from a distraught 35 year old male stating he was going to kill himself; that he was going to kill a police officer; or may have already killed a police officer. At the time of the call, APD only knew the male’s first name and where he worked. The male continued to make several more distraught phone calls to APD and in each one, threatened police officers and himself. Once the male was positively identified as Denny Gonzales, officers responded to his house in the 4800 block of Lefebvre Way off Country Hills Drive and Hillcrest Road, where he came out of his garage and down his driveway holding a firearm.

As APD officers told him to put the gun down, the male fired at least one round at the officers, who in turn fired back at the male. The male was pronounced dead at the scene.

As is standard protocol in officer involved shootings, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office was called in to conduct a joint investigation with APD.

Gonzales was a barber at the International Barber Shop in Antioch.

BART will operate on a Sunday schedule on the Independence Day holiday, Wednesday, July 4, 2012, with service beginning around 8 am. BART also will run longer trains and add special event trains as needed to accommodate riders attending the fireworks display at San Francisco’s Pier 39.

The largest crowds of fireworks-viewers are expected to be using Embarcadero Station. The fireworks over Pier 39 are scheduled to begin around 9:30 pm.

There will also be longer trains to serve fans attending the Oakland A’s vs. Boston Red Sox game at 1:05 pm at the Oakland Coliseum on July 4.

Riders are encouraged to buy a roundtrip ticket to avoid lines at ticket machines after events, or to use a Clipper card to avoid ticket machines altogether.

As a Legislature, we worked hard and collaboratively to responsibly achieve a balanced budget with $8 billion in cuts while seeking to protect children and students in California. With the Governor’s line-item vetoes, he has essentially launched the Hunger Games in California. From eliminating $10 million in child nutrition funding, to excluding 14,000 children from our communities’ child care centers, and expelling 12,500 of our poorest children from our State Preschool program, Governor Brown has demanded an unacceptable and unreasonable tribute to be paid to the State Reserve account.

From targeted cuts to State Pre-School, Child Nutrition, Childcare, CalWORKs, where 78% of recipients are children, Healthy Families, and Early Childhood Mental Health Initiative programs, this Governor has proven to have a calculated determination to make the poor children of California pay the highest price. Governor Brown has overplayed his hand and misjudged the appetite of Californians to cause suffering to children.
