There was much to do and see in Antioch’s historic downtown Rivertown and at the Historical Society Museum, during the weekend.

Car shows were held on Saturday, on both West Second Street, put on by the Midnighters NorCal car club, and at the museum, featuring cars from several car clubs in East County.

Spectators enjoyed the Delta Thunder VI speed boat races, put on by the Rivertown Jamboree, both Saturday and Sunday. Plus, the tall ship Lady Washington , docked behind the former Humphrey’s restaurant, featured both on-deck walking and river cruising tours.

Although delayed by high winds on Saturday, the speed boat races were under way about 4:00 p.m. and continued on Sunday morning and afternoon to the delight of the participants, spectators, sponsors and promoters.

The Delta Thunder VI speed boat races were delayed until a tanker was turned around near the tall ship Lady Washington, on Sunday, October 18.

A multi-club Car Show was held at the Antioch Historical Museum on Saturday, October 17, 2015.

The old west returns

Since 1941 the Grand National Livestock Exposition, Horse Show & Rodeo has been one of the most prestigious western lifestyle events in the West attracting thousands of participants and fans from California and other western states. The Cow Palace team would like to invite all of you to participate in two weekends of excitement. We are sure there will be something for everyone.

On October 16-17, and October 23-24, 2015 the Cow Palace will come alive with cowgirls, cowboys, an array of livestock, horses, western exhibits, tasty BBQ and our ever popular rodeo! The Grand National PRCA Rodeo will be produced for the 47th year by Cotton Rosser and the Flying U Rodeo Company. Rosser and his team will be bringing top stock for the 600 plus professional cowboys and cowgirls competing in seven rodeo events. Rodeo performances begin each night at 7:30 pm.

The Junior and Open Livestock Shows are “must see” events where youth and adult exhibitors will enter their best stock and compete for top prize money and the honor of showing a Grand National Champion. The Livestock Show starts on October 15 and runs through October 18. Cattle, sheep, goats, dairy cows, hogs and even rabbits will be on display.

In addition to the Livestock Exposition and Rodeo, the make sure to visit the various horse show events, barrel racing, drill team competitions, and stock dog trials. For the Arabian horse lover, the costume class will be showing during the rodeo performances on October 23-24. Grace, beauty and strength are all combined in this lovely presentation.

Don’t miss the Western Marketplace which is open from at 11 am – 11 pm all four days of the rodeo. Tack, jewelry, clothing and special western mementos will be among the items not to be missed. While in the Marketplace be sure to save your appetite for the nightly BBQ which begins at 5 pm, prior to each rodeo performance.

The Lady Washington

The tall ship Lady Washington, the official ship of the state of Washington, will stop at the Antioch City Marina October 14-26 and offer hands-on history experiences, tours, and public excursions. The ship is a replica of one of the first U.S.-flagged vessels to explore the west coast of North America. From its home port in Grays Harbor, Wash., Lady Washington visits ports in California throughout the school year, delivering education programs to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. Here’s the ship’s public schedule.

10/15-16: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., walk-on tours, $3 per person donation requested.

10/17-18: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., walk-on tours, $3 per person donation requested.

10/17: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Adventure Sail, $39-$47.

On October 18, Lady Washington will present “Encounters & Explorations: Echoes of Early Expeditions.” Join members of California Indian tribes and a historian from Fort Ross State Historic Park for a round-table discussion of the impact of early European and American exploration of the west coast on indigenous people. The three-hour sailing experience takes place aboard Lady Washington and includes demonstrations of tall ship handling, sea shanty singing, and maritime storytelling.

Adventure Sails are family-oriented experiences featuring opportunities for guests to take the helm of a real tall ship, conditions permitting. Tickets for all sails, including Encounters & Explorations, are available at www.historicalseaport.org, or by calling 800-200-5239. Excursion prices are $47 adults, $39 children 12 and under. Walk-on tours are by donation. No reservations for walk-on are required.

The 2015 stopover coincides with Delta Thunder VI powerboat races on the Sacramento River October 17-18.

PITTSBURG – Kites will fly this Sunday in Pittsburg at the City’s inaugural kiteboarding event! The City, together with its new watersports shop, The Kite Bar, will host the Launch the Launch RampKiteboarding Competition from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Riverview Park.

“This is just one step in our long-term vision to turn Riverview Park into an elite kiteboarding hub and training center,” said Garrett Evans, Assistant City Manager. “We also hope to expose our residents to our waterfront, and encourage them to try their hand at stand up paddling, kiteboarding, kayaking, and more.”

Since early 2013 the City has been working with the local Kiteboard community to make this a reality. This week Pittsburg put the finishing touches on its new non-motorized watercraft launch ramp at Riverview Park, and last week, The Kite Bar, the city’s new water/wind sports shop opened its doors. “We’re thrilled to see the action and enthusiasm around kiteboarding, and we’re excited to bring a new sport and adventure to our community. We always knew wind would be an asset to us, but we never knew it would evolve into something as exciting as this,” says Pittsburg Mayor Pete Longmire.

Sunday’s event will feature Big Air, Freestyle, and Slalom competitions with elite kite boarders from the Bay Area and beyond. Spectators can expect near-constant kiteboarding action from 10am-4pm. Free Stand Up Paddle Board trials will be available to the public throughout the day in The Kite Bar’s 15 foot demonstration pool. There will also be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new ramp, a demonstration by Kymera Body Boards, and delicious BBQ available for purchase. Event attendance for spectators is free. Sport Pool involved in chemical malfunction remains closed

Contra Costa County Environmental Health Department completed their facility inspection at the Antioch Water Park Friday evening and approved opening on Saturday, June 20, 2015. Pool chemistry was recorded compliant with California Health and Safety Codes.

The Sport Pool will remain closed to allow the City of Antioch and the County to conduct further testing in conjunction with the State of California. Sport Pool was the only pool involved in the chemical malfunction on Thursday, June 18, 2015.

To accommodate all guests the admission fees will be reduced to $12.00 for general admission. The lap pool will be available for use and all slides will be ready for visitors. Antioch Water Park provides unique summer fun for friends and families, and water play is great exercise!
