Kenneth Ray Turnage, Sr. the father of Kenneth Ray “Kenny” Turnage, II, a candidate for the Antioch City Council in the November election, was arrested on Wednesday for violating his parole, according to Antioch Police. Turnage, Sr., age 66, was attending a memorial service at Most Holy Rosary Catholic church on A Street in Antioch. Because it was too close to the Holy Rosary Catholic School, located next door, he was arrested.

According to Antioch Police Sergeant Tom Fuhrmann, county parole agents responded to an alert they had received from an ankle monitor of a parolee at a location he was not supposed to be.

“Turnage, Sr. is on parole from prison for sexual assault,” Furhmann stated. He was not allowed to be on or near any school campus.

“He was removed from the church and arrested,” Furhmann added. “The school was informed and was placed on lock down.”

Turnage, Sr., was arrested in July, 2009 for “lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years of age,” according to the Megan’s Law website. He was released from prison, earlier this year.

When reached for comment, Turnage II, the candidate, who is 44-years-old, made the following statement:

“Yes, my father, who is a parolee was arrested for being too close to a school, which was in violation of his parole. I do not have any further information at this time, because I do not keep in contact with my father. We have been estranged since he was released from incarceration on May 16, 2016.”

Fuhrmann said Turnage, Sr. would most likely “get a slap on the wrist for this and be released.”

On Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at approximately 3:17 p.m., Officers from the Antioch Police Department located a stolen Mercedez parked on Plymouth Lane at Hillcrest Avenue, with a subject getting into the vehicle. That subject was later identified as Ryan Kary (27 years old) out of Lafayette.

Officers converged on the vehicle and attempted to take Kary into custody. While ordering Kary

out of the car, he put the car in reverse and struck an Officer who was out of his vehicle. The Officer drew his firearm and fired shots into the vehicle. With the Mercedez now backed into the Officer’s vehicle, Kary indicated he was giving up.

Kary was pulled from the vehicle and further resisted being taken into custody. After a brief struggle Kary was taken into custody without further incident. Kary was treated and released on scene for minor injuries sustained during his struggle with officers. The Officer struck by the vehicle Kary was driving showed no immediate sign of injury. Nobody was struck by the gunshots.

Kary will be booked into the Contra Costa County Jail on charges to include Auto Theft and Assault with a Deadly Weapon on an Officer.

On Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at approximately 3:12 a.m. the Antioch Police Department received a call of a house fire at the listed location. Officers determined that an unknown responsible spray painted a racial slur and a swastika on the victim’s residence. The responsible also threw Molotov cocktails at the residence, catching the roof and bushes on fire. Damage to the residence was minimal and no one was injured.

Through investigative leads, Investigators from the Antioch Police Department and in cooperation with Contra Costa County Fire Arson Investigators, two suspects developed early on in the investigation. On Thursday, September 8, 2016 at around 5:00 p.m., Roy Charles Sorvari (27 years old) from Antioch and Christyne Gail McDaniel (25 years old) from Brentwood were both arrested for this incident after being interviewed by Investigators at the Antioch Police Department.

It is believed that there was a dispute between one person at the victims’residence and a relative of McDaniel that led up to Sorvari and McDaniel committing these crimes. This appears to be an isolated incident and not a random act of violence.

On Tuesday, September 13, this case was presented to the Office of the District Attorney and charges of conspiracy to commit murder, mayhem, torture, assault with a deadly weapon as well as a charge of arson were filed against both Sorvari and McDaniel. They were also charged with hate crimes enhancements. Both are being held in the Contra Costa County Jail with a bail amount of $1,290,000.

At a press conference, Tuesday afternoon, Antioch Police Chief Allan Cantando announced the arrest of two suspects in the hate crime that occurred in the city, early last Wednesday morning, September 7, 2016. In custody are Roy Charles Sorvari, age 27 of Antioch and Christyne Gail McDaniel, age 25 from Brentwood. They were arrested last Thursday, September 8 and are being held on $1.29 million bail.

The District Attorney charged them with multiple crimes, today, including attempted murder, aggravated mayhem, assault with intent for great bodily injury and with an enhancement for hate crime. The pair was also charged with arson of an inhabited dwelling.

“This was between a relative of McDaniel and a resident of the house,” Cantando stated. “It was not a random incident.”

Joined by Mayor Wade Harper, all four council members, he thanked the council for public for their help.

“Information from the tip-soft aided in the investigation,” Cantando added.

Asked why it was a hate crime, he responded, “based on the evidence, it’s very evident this was a hate crime.”

Asked if the surveillance video was helpful in apprehending the suspects, Cantando said “that will play a part in the prosecution of the case.”

He also shared that “information we received from involved parties in this case and the two individuals, helped contribute to this case.”

“Any time something like this happens in our community, we’re shocked,” the chief said. “This community should feel safe.”

“We had a lot more to do after that, with interviewing people and collecting evidence is why we kept it out of the media to protect the integrity of the investigation,” Cantado stated later, regarding why the arrests weren’t announced until Tuesday.

KTVU Fox 2 will be profiling the unsolved 1980 killing of 14-year-old Suzanne Bombardier at 10 p.m. Sunday, September 11 in the latest “Bay Area Unsolved” segment. Henry Lee, Crime Reporter for KTVU Fox 2, conducted the investigative segment.

Detectives from the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff are investigating a Deprivation of Custody case.

A relative was recently awarded temporary guardianship of 3-year-old Jahkai Smith by the Contra Costa Superior Court. The child’s father, 25-year-old Jahron Smith, has ignored the court order and refused to turn over the child. Jakhai is considered to be at risk due to age.

Descriptions:

Jahkai Smith – Male, 3′ tall, 50 pounds, black hair and brown eyes.

Jahron Najee Smith – Male, 5’11”, 155 pounds, brown hair and brown eyes. Jahron may be in the Bay Point or Antioch areas and has ties to Oakland.

UPDATE: On Friday, September 9, 2016, Roberta McConn was located in the City of Concord at an address she had prior associations with. She was found in good health and was voluntarily missing.

On Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 6:07 p.m., Antioch Police Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Daphne Court for the report of a missing adult. Upon arrival, it was discovered 64-year-old Roberta McConn suffers from memory loss and is non verbal. McConn was last seen in the morning hours on September 8 and her whereabouts are unknown at this time.

McConn was last seen wearing a blue shirt, light blue jean shorts and is believed to be in possession of a large tan purse. McConn is described as a white female, approximately 5’ 05” tall, 165 lbs, with brown hair and brown eyes.
