Officers came in on Saturday, April 27 to conduct a proactive enforcement detail, and what a day they had! That day’s enforcement efforts lead to seven arrests being made and 3 guns, including a rifle, being taken off the streets! Of those taken into custody, five were gang members as well. All seven suspects will be facing various weapons charges.

Enforcement efforts like today’s have been a regular occurrence in recent weeks, and with how successful they’ve been, will be continuing into the foreseeable future.

On April 25, 2019 at approximately 1:59 PM, Antioch Police Officers were dispatched to the Most Holy Rosary Church at 1313 A Street in Antioch, for reports of a nude male inside the small chapel. As the first officer arrived on scene, he observed a fully nude adult male running through the parking lot. This male was later positively identified as 28-year-old Pedro Mares. Mares was acting erratically and appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance. Mares briefly ran to a vehicle in the parking lot and then back into the chapel.

Additional officers were arriving on scene to assist and they entered the chapel in order to locate Mares. Mares was contacted inside the chapel. Mares continued to act erratically and ignored the officers’ commands. A violent struggle ensued as officers attempted to detain Mares, who was exhibiting extreme strength and no apparent reaction to pain. Three officers were eventually able to overpower Mares and place him into handcuffs. Two of the officers sustained minor to moderate injuries during the struggle.

After being treated at a local hospital, Mares will be booked at County Jail for PC 69 – Resisting arrest by violence and HS 11550(a) – Being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Suspect arrested by Antioch Police on April 18, 2019.

Thursday morning, April 18, 2019 around 3 a.m., Antioch Police officers were dispatched to a suspicious circumstance involving a man with a gun in the area of Aster Drive. Officers located the man walking away into a nearby apartment complex and were able to quickly catch up and detain him.

During a search of the area K9 Purcy located a .40 caliber Glock handgun with an extended magazine in a nearby bush.

The man was arrested for multiple weapons violations and K9 Purcy was rewarded with his favorite toy.

On Monday, we welcomed Officer Ashley Crandell. Ashley was raised in Roseville and graduated from Wood Creek High School. After graduating High School, Ashley moved to the Bay Area and attended Contra Costa Community College. While in college, Ashley worked for the Contra Costa Community College District Police Department as a Police Aide. Ashley earned her Associates degree in Administration of Justice and graduated with honors.

Ashley attended Alameda County’s Police Academy and was a Deputy Sheriff for Alameda County for two years prior to joining the Antioch Police Department.

In her free time, Ashley enjoys hiking and backpacking, reading, and spending quality time with her family.

A fun fact about Ashley is that she has no fear of heights and is fascinated by bears. While backpacking, in Yosemite she got to see a mother bear and two cubs up close.

Recently an alert citizen notified dispatch of a suspicious vehicle driving around in their neighborhood. Officers responded to the area, located the vehicle and while contacting the occupants of the vehicle, officers observed a suspected firearm inside the vehicle. The occupants were removed from the vehicle and the suspected firearm was found to be a replica. Metal knuckles were located on the driver.

During the investigation, the vehicle was found to be stolen out of Antioch and was later reunited with the owner. Two of the occupants were arrested without incident and charged with various crimes. The third occupant was released. All three individuals were juveniles from Antioch.

Tuesday (April 9, 2019) was a very good day for the Antioch Police Department, while not being a very good day for a couple of suspected drug dealers. Early in the afternoon, Officer Smith and his K9 partner, Kona, responded to assist on a traffic stop. Kona was utilized for her ability to locate narcotics and alerted on the vehicle stopped. She was then able to pinpoint an area of the vehicle and approximately 2 lbs. of suspected methamphetamine was located, hidden in the vehicle.

Then, late Tuesday night, graveyard officers responded to a disturbance in the 5000 block of Rockwall Way. As it turned out, this appears to have been a narcotics transaction gone awry. A male subject involved was found to be in possession of an ounce of suspected cocaine, an ounce of suspected methamphetamine, over a half pound of marijuana, a loaded firearm, and a large amount of cash.

Both suspects from both incidents were sent to the main detention facility in Martinez for several different felony charges.

On Monday, we welcomed lateral officer Brandon Bushby. Brandon grew up in Albany and graduated from Albany High School. While in high school, he played both football and baseball.

In 2009, Brandon joined the El Cerrito Police Department as a Police Explorer before being hired as a police cadet in 2012.

In 2013, Brandon put himself through the Napa Valley College Police Academy while working for El Cerrito PD. After graduating the academy in 2014, Brandon was hired as a police officer for the City of Stockton. For the last four years, he has worked patrol and was a field training officer.

In his free time, Brandon enjoys working out, hiking, shooting, and spending time with family and friends. Brandon is very eager to serve the City of Antioch and is honored to join the Antioch Police family.

A fun fact about Brandon is that he collects police patches and has nearly a thousand of them.

Late last night on Saturday, March 30 just before midnight at 11:57pm, CHP was advised of a possible freeway shooting that occurred on HWY-4 W/B between Franklin Canyon and McEwen Road, just outside of Martinez.

Upon CHP arrival, the victim vehicle, a silver Nissan Maxima, was parked on the right shoulder with two apparent bullet holes in the windshield. The two victims in the Nissan, an adult male driver and an adult female passenger, we’re thankfully not injured and awaiting CHP‘s arrival and were cooperative throughout the entire investigation. The suspect vehicle fled the area.
We have learned through the victims the following; They were traveling on HWY-4 W/B when possibly a newer model white Toyota Corolla (or a similar style vehicle) quickly approached the back of the Nissan, began tailgating them, and then moved to pass on the left side, as the Nissan began to slow.

The victim driver related the passenger of the suspect Toyota began yelling and screaming at them. The male victim then slowed and parked the Nissan on the right shoulder in an attempt to allow the suspect to pass but the suspect vehicle also stopped on the right shoulder & parked in front of the Nissan. Then the male victim related bullets were fired at them from the passenger side window of the suspect Toyota, striking the Nissan windshield. Luckily the male and female victim both ducked below the dash and we’re not injured. Then the suspect vehicle fled the area.
The suspect passenger is described as a white male adult between 35-40 years old, bald, w/ tattoos on his face and right arm. The driver is described as possibly a mixed ethnicity adult male between 30-35 years old, with short black hair.

This incident is still under investigation and we do not have any further details or information to release.
We cannot predict when criminals are going to commit these crimes but what we can do, is a thorough investigation in which you can possibly assist us. We’d like to advise the public of these TIPS if you witness or have information regarding any freeway shooting;
1 – Know which freeway you’re on with your direction of travel, and nearest offramp
2 – Try to get a make, model and color of the suspect vehicle, and a full license plate if possible
3 – Try to get a description of the suspect or suspects, male or female, approximate age, ethnicity, clothing description, identifying marks or tattoos, etc.
