Antioch Lapidary Club to host annual Jewelry, Gem and Rock Show this weekend

Antioch Lapidary Club logoThe Antioch Lapidary Club will hold their annual Jewelry, Gem & Rock Show on Saturday and Sunday, February 15 and 16, 2014 from 10:00 a.m – 5:00 p.m. at the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds, 1201 West 10th Street, Antioch.

Attendees will enjoy seeing and buying jewelry, gems, findings, supplies, grab bags, exhibits and hands on projects for kids, plus an auction.

Admission is $4.00, children 12 & under, Scouts in uniform and active military with ID get in free.

The Board of Administrative Appeals consists of five members and one alternate to be appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by a majority of the Council. The alternate member shall serve a term of two years.

The Board hears appeals regarding administrative decisions by any official of the city.

The Board meets on the first Thursday of the month at 3:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers; or on other dates as needed. Members of the Board of Administrative Appeals are required to file an annual “Statement of Economic Interest”.

To be considered for this volunteer position, a completed application must be received in the office of the City Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m., Thursday, January 30, 2014.

Antioch Native Daughters of the Golden West honors 75-year member

At their December meeting, the Antioch Parlor #223, of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, had the privilege of presenting member Betty Giannotti, who joined the Parlor in 1939, with her 75-year pin. She was presented the pin by Grand President of the Antioch Parlor, Jackie Wallace.

Betty has held every office in the Parlor except Financial Secretary and Treasurer and is currently Past President.

She was born in Madera and her family came to Antioch when she started Kindergarten. Betty graduated from Antioch High School in 1938. She worked for Attorneys Ham and Arnison, then for the Antiocch High School District for 38 years. She married Lorenzo Giannotti in 1940 and had a daughter, Carolyn and a son, Norman and has five grandchildren. Since she retired, Betty spends her summers in Lake Tahoe.

The members of Antioch Parlor are proud to have such an outstanding, faithful member. At this time, the Parlor has 32 members, with two over the age of 100 and nine members have received their 50-year pins. Antioch Parlor #223 was organized in Antioch in 1923 and has had two State Grand Presidents.

The Order of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, formed in 1886, is a fraternal and patriotic organization founded on the principles of Love of Home, Devotion to the Flag, Veneration of the Pioneers and Faith in the Existence of God. Love of California is evident in the Order’s unceasing efforts to promote the study of her romantic history and reverence for the memory of the sturdy Pioneer Fathers and Mothers, the founders of our great state. Antioch to hold 6th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration next Monday

The City of Antioch and the Antioch Unified School District, along with community partners and sponsors, will present the 6th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Celebration & Scholarship Awards in the Deer Valley High Theater, 4700 Lone Tree Way, on January 20th, 2014, at 1:00 PM.

Keynote Speaker, author Maggie Anderson has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, BET News and CBS Morning News, among many other national television and radio shows. She has become the leader of a ‘conscious consumerism’ movement that supports quality black business and mainstream companies with substantive supplier diversity.

The celebration began in 2009 with then Antioch City Council Member Reggie Moore’s desire to celebrate Dr. King’s historical contributions, along with creating a scholarship program for high school and middle school students.  The tradition continues under the leadership of Mayor Wade Harper and partnership with the Antioch Unified School District, along with the support of business and community leaders.

Boy Scouts offer Treecycling to recycle your Christmas tree

Antioch Drop-off Locations: You can drop off your trees from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday,

Dec. 28-29, 2013,  & Jan. 4-5, 2014, at the Prewett Family Water Park parking lot and at the Antioch Marina Overflow Parking Lot at 2nd and L streets. Please remove tree stands before drop-off.

Boy Scout Treecycling: Scouts will pick up holiday trees Saturday - Sunday, Dec. 28-29, 2013, & Jan. 4 - 5, 2014. Have trees ready for pickup before 9 a.m. at the curb. Donations of $10 for unflocked trees or $1 per foot if taller than 10 feet or $20 for flocked trees, payable to BSA, would be appreciated. Any yard waste week: Place unflocked trees in yard waste cart. Branches must be 6 inches or less in diameter and 3 feet or less in length. Cut off tree top. Remove tree stand. Lid must be closed.

Flocked trees can be picked up for a fee of $40 or as one of your two, free, large-item pickups.

Hundreds participate in 37th Holiday Run and Walk for Health

Hundreds of people from the Bay Area and beyond participated in the Kiwanis Club of the Delta-Antioch’s 37th Annual Holiday Run & Walk for Health, around the Contra Loma Reservoir, on Saturday, December 14.

The event is a fundraiser for local causes, including the Antioch library. Co-founded and still co-sponsored by Antioch’s own Tom Torlakson, the current State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the day included 10K, 3-mile and 1-mile races, with overall winners for each race, as well as based on age categories.

While Jennifer Derego, age 34 of Brentwood won the 10K race with a time of 41 minutes 28.61 seconds, four Antioch runners placed in the top ten: J

arrod Aghily, age 17 placed 6th, Arkady Sanderson, age 16 placed 7th, William Pace, age 20 placed 8th and Itai Mordo, age 28, placed 10th.

The youngest runner to win in an age category was Antioch’s Isabella Laspina, age 10, finishing 20th overall, with a time of 58:30.78 in the Females 13 & Under and Ben Elies, age 13 also of Antioch, who finished 15th overall, with a time of 56:52.83 in the Male 13 & Under category.

In the 3-Mile Run and Walk, Brentwood’s Eric Morford, age 20 with a time of 16:20.40. Antioch’s William Berger, age 27 took 3rd.

The youngest winner for the Boys 9 & Under was Jaylin Cobbs, age 9 of Antioch and Girls 9 & Under was Mariela Torres, age 6 also of Antioch.
